Greetings families!
We have an exciting week ahead of us in 5th grade! On Wednesday during Library our class is meeting with author Rajani LaRocca via Zoom. She just won a Newbury honor, so it is a very exciting time to get to meet her! Wednesday is also Global School Play Day! Mr. Trifilio sent out some information in Friday's Core Newsletter about it. What it will look like for 5th grade is we will have the afternoon of unstructured play (without any screens) inside and if the weather cooperates we will also have some time outside to get some fresh air! Students are allowed to bring in any kind of toy or game that does not have a screen and is not battery-operated. Some examples include: ● Non-Violent Toys (no weapons) ● Legos, blocks, cardboard boxes, etc. ● Dress-Up ● Puppets ● Stuffed Animals ● Board Games ● Puzzles ● Sports equipment *no electronic devices* On Friday report cards are going home. If you have any questions/concerns please let me know! I will also include a letter about some standards on the report card that I haven't checked for mastery yet. I also wanted to give some information about Valentine's Day this year. We are allowing students to share Valentine's Day cards. If you want to include a pre-packaged treat that is ok, but do remember that we are a peanut/tree-nut free classroom and none of the treats can have peanuts/tree-nuts; also no home-made snacks. Students do not have to make/bring in Valentine's, but if they do, they must bring one for the entire class. I will send home a class list with students closer to Valentine's Day, but we have 22 students in our room (there are also 2 adults if your student wants to include us, but that is not required). I was hoping to have a little celebration as a class, so if there were some adults who would be willing to pick up some snacks for everyone like juice and some popcorn and potentially some decorations for the classroom, that would be amazing! Please email me if you are interested and I can coordinate with all parents who are interested! Also this Friday I will be out in the afternoon for an appointment, so if you have any last-minute changes to pick-up or anything, please let the front office know because I will not be able to check my email after 12:45. I know that was a lot of information at once, so thank you for hanging in there! Have a wonderful afternoon! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold

Greetings families!
I hope you are all staying warm in this consistently cold weather! I don't have a lot of updates this week, but wanted to remind you that this Friday, January 28th is an early dismissal day. Dismissal will start at 12:20. Please let me know if there are any changes to your student's normal Friday dismissal plan. Some exciting news is that our class will have a Zoom meeting with author Rajani LaRocca next week. We are currently reading her book Much Ado About Baseball as our classroom read aloud. Another one of her books Red, White, and Whole just won a Newberry honor! I've linked her website down below if you want to take a look! I wish you all a wonderful afternoon! Stay well! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold Greetings families!
We have had a bit of a crazy week starting at the end of last week. On Thursday I woke up feeling a bit under the weather so I stayed home and got tested for covid. The students did a really excellent job with our substitute teacher, they did a great job with the weird schedule changes and stuff! Even though I felt better on Saturday, I didn't get my negative covid results until Monday night, so I was also out Monday and students had another sub. With the "freeze" day on Tuesday, I was out for almost an entire week. Students did a great job getting right back into things today, but I must say that I am a little discombobulated after being out for so long! Upcoming dates: Monday, January 17th - there is no school for Martin Luther King Jr. Day Wednesday, January 19th - Farm to School In Social Studies students have all received their family that they will be making decisions for as they travel west. Today we started choosing what items are most important to bring with us and we will continue working on that before starting our simulation. I hope you all stay warm on this cold day! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold Happy New Year families!!!
I hope you all had a relaxing and restorative winter break! We have started back into our routine at school, but it was a bit different to have indoor recess on Monday because of how cold it is! I wanted to give the reminder that we go outside for recess as long as the "feels like" temperature is about zero degrees, so please make sure that your student dresses appropriately for the weather! Also, please let me know if there are things that your student might need like coats, snowpants, or boots. If your student is going to be absent, please send me an email and make sure to cc Allyson Yandow ( [email protected] ) to let us know. In the event that I am also out, I will not be able to let the office know if the email was only sent to me. You could also call the school directly to let us know of absences. We are starting our next Social Studies unit, which is all about Westward Expansion. Students will be a part of a simulation where they will make decisions for a family traveling west as a part of a wagon train. They will be faced with challenges to overcome along the way and we will see if they make it all the way to Oregon! As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold |
