Greetings everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying the second to last week of school! There are a lot of happenings coming up, so I'll get right to it:
Another note about Smugg's. Please let me know asap if your student is not attending so that I can give the final ticket count to the PTO so they can purchase the correct number of tickets. Don't forget: Civil War Projects are due tomorrow!!! Have a great afternoon! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan

Greetings families!
I can't believe how close to the end of the year it is! We are officially done state testing (woohoo!) although students do have a few district-level assessments that they are working on this week, like math windowpanes to see what math strategies they know how to use. In math we just finished a unit on dividing fractions and are moving on to multiplying and dividing decimals! We have also finished up our writing unit on narrative writing and have moved on to learning more about the Civil War. I have had a lot of questions about the Civil War project so I want to clarify some things in case you have the same questions: 1. Students will be working on their essays in school. They will only bring them home to work on closer to the deadline if they aren't finished, but they should have plenty of time. 2. Students will be presenting to the class, but the family presentation on June 15th is less formal and they will stand by their trifold and answer any questions as people come by (not presenting by themselves in front of everyone) 3. Right now students are working on research at school and if they feel like they have enough information, they can begin to put together their trifold. If students need things printed at school or other materials like markers, glue, construction paper, etc. I am happy to provide those materials, I just need to know. Anything "extra" like stickers or stencils would be the responsibility of the families (please know that this is not an expectation, but it is an option if families choose). Please reach out if you have any other questions! I also wanted to give you the information about 5th Grade Fun Day in case you missed it in the Core: Hi Parents, We are thrilled that our 5th graders' fun day is planned! We will be going to Smuggler's Notch on Tuesday, June 13th 2023. We will be departing after the start of the school day. We will be taking school buses to get to Smuggler's Notch. We will be back in time for the end of the school day so that 5th graders can get home via their usual dismissal plans. Students can look forward to swimming in the heated pool with waterslides, and adventuring indoors at the Funzone, which features bounce houses and mini golf. Please note that students will not have access to the arcade. Lunch will be provided with this trip - it will include pizza, a drink, a snack and a dessert. The Cost for this trip will be $45.00 per student. Please consider making a donation to cover the cost of your child's trip and if you are able, an additional amount to contribute towards any student who is not able to make a contribution. All 5th graders will be welcome to attend, regardless of ability to pay. Parents are welcome to join us at Smuggs for the day. A separate sign up sheet will be available on Konstella for those parents who wish to join us and help out with being a chaperone. Kids will be able to ride home with their parent if they would like at the end of the day. Students will need to bring
Payment can be made electronically via Konstella at the link below: https://www.konstella.com/app/school/6053aecc105c0243ef2edbfa/donations/64654f7e47fcebc536f056b0 Or by check made payable to Orchard PTO and sent in to your classroom teacher. We look forward to celebrating this special occasion. The Orchard PTO has graciously organized this event so I may not have all of the information, but I can reach out to someone if I don't know how to answer any further questions about the day. I'm sure that it will be a ton of fun! As always, please don't hesitate to reach out! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan Hi all!
Happy May! Our students have been doing such a great job trucking through the VT CAP assessments. The new system has been a learning process for all of us, but we are officially finished the ELA and math portions! We have 2 days of Science testing left and then we are done for the year! For our Farm to School lesson this month, we are going to be taking a trip to the Common Roots Farm! We will be going on Friday from 9:00-11:00am. If you do not give your student permission to attend this trip, please send me an email no later than Wednesday night. We will be leaving at 8:45am on Friday, so please try to make sure that your student is on time and that they are dressed for the weather. A water bottle would also be a good idea since it's supposed to be warm that day! I hope that you all have a wonderful evening and that you enjoy our spring weather! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan Greetings families!
I hope everyone who was able to attend enjoyed our rocket launch yesterday. We had a blast! I have a couple of announcements:
Spring outdoor gear: Please make sure that students have a pair of shoes to wear outside so that we don't track mud into our classroom. It doesn't have to be boots, but our field stays pretty muddy, so a change of shoes would be great. Also, many students have been wearing shorts recently and our school policy is that if the "feels like" temperature is below 50 degrees, students must have long pants and long sleeves. Please have students bring long pants as well when they wear shorts until it is consistently over 50 degrees. I hope that you all have a restful and relaxing April break! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan Greetings families!
We have a weird schedule until break, so I wanted to give you a heads up. 4/13 Thursday: Play at Orchard during the school day 4/14 Friday: Early Release
4/17 Monday: All Elementary Schools field trip to High School to see Chris Poulus 4/18 Tuesday: Middle School Counselor visit at Orchard for students 4/20 Thursday: Rocket Launch Day! Starts at 1:15 - families welcome to join us outside on the field! 4/24 - 4/28: April Break We had a great day at Starbase and enjoyed the beautiful weather! I am going to be sharing pictures of students in a Google folder after rocket launch day, so you can get all of the pictures at once! Next week we are going to be making time to practice for our state testing, which is new test this year: VTCAP. State testing will begin the Tuesday after April Break. I hope that you all enjoy this beautiful weather! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan Greetings families!
I hope you are enjoying this (slightly) warmer weather! I realized that somehow I lost a week at some point and Starbase is already NEXT WEEK!!! On Wednesday, April 5th we will have our first visit to the Air National Guard Base to learn about science, engineering, and other cool things! Our second (and last) day at Starbase will be the following Wednesday, April 12th. Our rocket launch day (at Orchard) will be on Thursday, April 20th. Families are welcome to attend this event, and it will be outside! I will give you the times once we have that squared away! Today, I sent home an Emergency Contact form that is for Starbase. This form is required by Starbase staff/the Air National Guard for any student setting foot on the base. If I do not have this form for your student by the time we leave next Wednesday, they cannot come. I cannot accept a phone call. Please make sure this form gets returned ASAP! On the back of the form is the behavior policy at Starbase. I made it clear to students today that if they are not being their best selves, they will not be invited back, but going over that again wouldn't hurt! There is also a general letter about the program that you can read as well. We do not accept chaperones for these trips. I am sorry for the late notice on this, I can't believe it is already almost April! Please let me know if you have any questions! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan P.S. I will be reaching out about finalized conference times soon! If your student was originally in Mrs. Bliss's class, I will reach out soon about scheduling! Important Date:
Friday, March 24th - No School: Teacher Inservice Hi all! Happy St. Patrick's Day! Just to let everyone know that my email account has officially been changed to [email protected] so you will receive emails from this account now. If you accidentally email the old account, it will still forward the information to me at the new one, so no big deal there. We celebrated as a whole school today with a "The Floor Is Lava" challenge periodically throughout the day. I will say that I was impressed with the students in our class in how they had fun while keeping their bodies safe! If you have any questions about anything play-related, please reach out to [email protected] In Math, we are currently finishing up a unit on Order of Operations. Students have been doing a great job of working with many different types of problems! We have also been working on liquid measurement using milliliters, deciliters, and liters. I hope that you all have a great weekend! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan Important Dates:
- Sunday, March 12th: Daylight Savings, spring forward! - Friday, March 17th: Early Release Day Greetings families! I hope that you all had a fabulous February Break! Students came back to a gift of the book Finally Seen by Kelly Yang (they're autographed too!). Our wonderful PTO bought the books for all 4th and 5th graders, so a big thank you to them for making that happen! Our entire 5th grade class has done a really great job of adjusting to the changes we have had in the past few weeks. Students have been flexible and friendly with each other. We have a really great classroom community! Play practice has officially started, and I can't wait to see all of the hard work that the cast and crew puts in! I don't have anything else to share at the moment, but please let me know if there is anything you need! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan Greetings families!
I'm sure you have heard from your student at this point that we are having some students from Mrs. Bliss's classroom join us in our room. The district has been unable to find a long-term substitute for Mrs. Bliss's classroom, so we will be gaining some students in the meantime. It is a change that comes with a bit of adjustment and a lot of feelings, so please try and support your student at this time. Students will be joining our room starting tomorrow! Our room will also be a nut free classroom starting tomorrow. I did let students know today that any food they are planning on eating in our classroom for snack time must be nut free. Students can continue to have nuts at lunch time, but they cannot come into our classroom. If students do have nuts at lunch, they will need to wash their hands before entering our room. Also, a reminder that Friday is an early release day! Please reach out if you need anything! Sincerely, Mrs. Petzold Reagan P.S. Update on the name change front: I have officially gotten my new ID, so I will be changing my email soon, but not yet. I will give you a heads up when that happens! Important Date:
Next Friday, January 27th - Early Release Day Greetings families! I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful snow! My drive in this morning was gorgeous! Students earned 100 apple cards yesterday so today we are celebrating with some free computer time. In math, we are continuing our unit on fractions and are now working on multiplying fractions! We are currently practicing a model as a way to show our thinking. We also started a new swap block, students are now in Social Studies and are learning about westward expansion. They will be taking part in a simulation where they play a family traveling west. Report cards are coming soon! Please let me know if your student usually brings home two report cards for different households. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Stay warm! Sincerely, Mrs. Reagan |
