Hi all,
It is second week of SBAC testing and students have worked so hard! Tomorrow we have an early dismissal from school, starting at 12:25. Student will have lunch at school and the options are Turkey or Tomato sandwiches, not what was originally on the lunch menu for tomorrow. I've had some questions about a 5th grade graduation event and I know that it probably can't be the traditional graduation that we do, but there is planning going on to have some sort of celebration for the 5th grade. I will give more information as decisions are finalized! That is all of the announcements that I have this week. Have a wonderful Wednesday! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold

Greetings families!
I hope you are enjoying this warmer weather, our class certainly is! We have completed 3 days of SBAC testing so far and the students have been doing an amazing job! You should be so proud of their hard work and resiliency! An important reminder: next Wednesday, May 26th is an early release day. Dismissal will begin at 12:30. Please let me know if that changes any dismissal plans for your students. I just got confirmation that we will be able to take a trip to the Middle School on June 4th so students can take a tour! We will be going on a bus with just our class so that we can maintain social distancing. I'm so glad we were able to make this opportunity happen for our 5th graders this year! I also have a charger that does not belong to school turn up in our classroom. It's an hp charger that will charge a Chromebook. If you recognize those specs, please let me know and I can get it back to the right family! Also, if you find charger #7, we are missing that one. That is all of the news that I have this week! Have a wonderful Wednesday! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold Hello all!
This week is our first time having 5 days a week in school! So exciting! We are going to try and get some silent reading time outside tomorrow (hopefully the weather cooperates). We had our first day of SBAC preparation today. Students practiced how to log into the assessment and use the tools that are available to them on the tests by answering practice problems. We will have 2 SBAC practice tests later this week, one each on Thursday and Friday. Next week we will begin testing M-Th. This Friday I will be sending home tri-folds for the Civil War Project so students can begin working on them. They will have some time to work on the projects in class, but they will need to spend some time at home working on their projects as well. I am happy to help provide materials like construction paper, markers, and glue (just let me know and I can send those materials home). If you wanted more specialized materials, you would have to purchase them yourselves. I only have enough tri-folds for each student to get one, so please make sure to not glue anything down until your student has planned where they want everything to go! (I did tell them this already, but I figured a second reminder wouldn't hurt!). Students will also be working on a "show what you know" project of their choice. Examples include: a model of a battlefield, a brochure about their topic, a slideshow, or an informative video. Students need to tell me their project proposal by this Friday. There are some example project ideas in the Civil War Packet (which can be found under the Civil War tab of this website!) If you have any questions about the project or anything else, please let me know! Have a great afternoon! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold Greetings families!
May the Fourth be with you! Today I surprised students by dressing up as Princess Leia and playing Star Wars music to celebrate Star Wars Day today! We had a blast! This Wednesday will be our last remote Wednesday! Next week, students will be at school on Wednesday and we will continue with 5 days a week for the rest of the year. Our Wednesday classroom schedule will be different than our other days: we'll have some independent work time to complete unfinished work, a longer science block, and focus on things like reading time. I also hope to get us outside as much as possible now that the weather is improving! You may notice that it seems like there aren't as many assignments this week: that is because I want students to spend a lot of time working on their Civil War Project Report Outlines. I went through expectations today and have included pretty thorough directions for them to complete. The goal is to finish if possible, but at minimum, they need to have at least 3 paragraphs outlined by Thursday. The previously set due date for the Report was May 7th (this Friday), but we didn't get started as early as planned, so we are pushing back the report due date until next Friday, May 14th. I don't want students to start the actual essay yet, just focus on the outline for now! Have a wonderful Wednesday! Sincerely, Ms. Petzold |
